Washington

Hello all, i’m in Washington as you can tell. I’ve been staying at my Aunts place for the last couple of days or so, after catching my flight from Orlando. Saturday was a nice relaxing day spent with my Aunt and family just relaxing and running errands. On the menu that night was Seafood Gumbo a real treat as I was just in the south and didn’t get to try any.

On Sunday I was driven to see the Arlington Cemetry, where JFK and the Kennedy’s graves are along with the grave of the Unknown Solider with its guards. The Guards have a very strict entry requirement not only on height and weight etc, but they must give up alcohol, and Swearing for the rest of their life!

Then on to the fish markets, to try some more of the special crabs (its crab season here so there are crabs everywhere) so ofcourse I had to experience a crabcake sandwich and their Maryland Crab Soup which was not bad.

Today was a also a big day, I walked my feet off. I was dropped off Near the Australian Embassy in Washington 16th and Masachusettes if you must know. Made my way down to the WhiteHouse first.

Then Made my way to the Washington Monument, which you can go up its view is 500ft in the air giving a fantastic view of Washington, unfortunately it was a slightly hazy day so the photos still need to be processed. With the Washington Monument all you have to do is go to the ticket house on the bottom of the Monument and grab a ticket for about an hours time. Cost $0.00 USD! Thats right kids, Washington is basically free for all the attractions!

From there I made my way to the capitol hill building, which is just down the road. They say its a 5 min brisk walk, that is rubbish! its a 20 min walk or a 30 min stroll.

This was enough time to walk to Capitol Hill and walk back to the monument to go up the 500ft via elevator, which is rather cool. I highly recommend it. Following that I went for a walk to the Lincoln Memorial on the other side, via the WW2 Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial on the way back. I was really impressed with the Vietnam Memorial.

Tomorrow is Museum day with Smithsonian Visits planned all around!

Remember you can always keep upto date with all my photos here.

I’m surprised they let you go up the Washington Monument.

1.) I didn’t even know you could go up it.
2.) They don’t let you go up most of the symbols these days, ie Statue of Liberty

They have just opened up the statue of liberty as well, although the first time I could get up there is in November. The Washington Monument just got reopened, but was pretty cool for paying nothing.

Wow, just looked it up and you are right. I was really disappointed when I heard you couldn’t go up there so that is great news :)
