I’m back from spending three wonderful days on Rottnest Island, We have the Europeans to thank for the name of Rottnest Island, as when they came through, the little Quokka’s they saw, they thought were giant rats infested all over the Island, and called in Rattsnest Island, which after a while was made into Rottnest Island. Getting away from the history lesson, its only 2 hours from the center of Perth, or 1/2 an hour from Fremantle so depending on where you stay in Perth, it may be worth while to catch it from Fremantle port.

Rottnest island is probably one of the most beautiful natural places around today, that is largely untouched. Many times I found myself with a beach to myself. At one stage I had a 3 km long sandy white beach to myself with crystal clear water. At this time of year, the Whales are also migrating past the Island and if you are lucky enough you may just see them off the Island, otherwise you can always get a trip to see the whales. It is only $60 which is nothing compared to the eastern states.

If you don’t know what a Quokka is, it is a small marsupial which looks like a combination of a Rat, a Wallaby and a Kangaroo all in one, here is a picture of one underneath my feet feeding on the figs.

Quokka

The animals on the Island are very very friendly, all the quokkas will just about come up to you for a pat. Of course as it is Australia, there were plenty of Lizzards, Geckos, and a few snakes on the Island.

Peacock

The waters were crystal clear, as where the lakes!

Tough Life for some

Rottnest Island Panorama

This is just one of those places where the photos do all the talking!
